2009 Rovers Winter Season: GAME ON!

The 2009 Rovers winter season starts tonight at the Lachine Catalognia SoccerPlexe @ 10 PM

Rovers_FootballThis years team looks pretty strong, the Twin Towers of goal keeping are back to share the duties. Team Captain, Owen Branigan, and rookie keeper, Francois Fortier held their own through out summer in what can only be described as a rebuilding year. Up front the Pocket Power forwards of Marty Bellemare and Bobby Piazza seem to finally be getting over the language barrier and finally getting some goals into the back of the net. Long serving Rovers veterans Tony Buffo, Gary Albrecht, Hector Alcortag, Steve Duckworth and José Velazquez return for another winter season providing some solid defending and leadership up front. Along with all the of the experience, we’re counting on Tonny right (and sometimes left) foot,  Gary’s fervour and Hector’s lungs to the 13 strong side. José is joined in the middle by this summer’s Latin sensation: Juan Ruiz Mendoza.  Adding to the middle is sometimes midfield and is Jeff Ayoub who you can always count to move on up and strike the deal! And finally rounding  out the roster is another summer addition acquired during the spring transfer window from the Predators: Michel Bassil.  The Rovers are counting on Michel to repeat his summer exploit of 1 goal at least another 15 times.

See  you all tonight!

Pizza and Beer After Tonight’s Playoff

Bobby’s buying the beers and ordering pizza for the team after tonight’s playoff against the Sonics.

We drew against them, 2 all, just this past Sunday with Only 10 men due to and early retirement from Nick.

It looks like we’ll have a near full roster for tonight rematch as well as the return of our pocket rocket forwards Marty and Bobby.

See you all there!

Rovers Drop To Last Place After A 5-1 loss to the Selects

"At least the Beer Cold"

The Rovers continue to struggle to score points in their 2009 rebuilding campaign. After fielding exactly 11 men for the game, they manage to stave off the Selects offense through the first half with some good passing through the midfield and some exciting saves from rookie keeper Jean Francois Fortier. Tony Bufo netted the only goal for the Rovers before the Selects managed to coordinate their attack as well as benefit from a few on-side calls. Other notable mentions for the match: Bobby Piazza, Enzo Cerif, Juan Mendoza and Jean Marrier. The very fact that the whole team  played  the entire duration of the match in less than favorable conditions also has to be mentioned.

The Iron-Side Rovers struggled through the second half as fatigue set into the team. Veteran Rover call up: Enzo Cefis had to retire due to a recurring hamstring injury. The lack of subs meant the team finished the game with 10 men despite a clean card sheet.

The Selects goals were scored by Christian Theirren (14), Andre Tremblay (19) 2 goals, Javier Hoyos (17) 2 goals. Tremblay and Hoyos also picked up yellow cards. Tony Bufo scored the Rover lone goal.

Beer Duties for Sunday The 9th of August: Peter Mueggler
Friday The 14th of August: Hector Alcorta

Rovers Go Down Fighting Against the Azzurri Olympics

Post Game Beers
The Rovers suffered there second defeat of the season last night but not without going down with a fight… and a few cards.

The benches were almost full and they held off the new Azzurri coloured Olympics for a good part of the first half, before Rovers newcomer Peter Mueggler was controversially sent off. However the Olympics applied a lot of pressure the 10 Rovers and finally took the game 3-1.

Our Next game is Friday the 26th at 9PM at Terra Cotta Park Field 1 – Lower. You can add the calendar to your Outlook or your own Google Calendar account by clicking on any of these links:

Welcome the Rovers Football Club

The Rovers Football Club are one of the original founding teams of the Pointe-Claire Soccer Association’s League of Gentlemen (LOGS). Their green shirts can usually been seen across the pitches of Terra Cotta Lower and Voyageur parks on Friday or Sunday nights throughout the summer. Usually their appearance is preceded by “Here come the Dreaded Rovers”. The Rovers are the last ones to take to the pitch and their are always the last ones to leave the grassy knolls of Terra-Cotta.
